I live in a city apartment. The unit upstairs from us was remodeled last summer, in a way that stripped out all the sound insulation between us. Sound comes through from them to us more clearly than it does to the open air, because the floor/ceiling acts as a soundboard rather than a block.

This has been a problem all year, but it's especially troublesome now, when leaving the apartment is not a great idea. The upstairs people like to party, and it drives my partner up the wall.

Oh, not fun. I'm sorry for that.

Especially if they use a music with a lot of bass. I love hiphop, but that shit is so bass heavy that it could cause a problem in units like yours. Along with Dance, house, and other such musics.

...

And don't even get me started with Dubstep. ... I'll stop now. xd

TL;DR, I feel for you.

Oh, that's awful. Getting away from the noise of people living above me is the #1 reason I want to get out of apartment living at some point. My apartment is pretty well insulated, but you can still here people walking around and loud voices when it's quiet at night. I suppose it's a money thing but you'd think builders could do a better job with insulation in apartments. Hope your neighbors shut up soon!

I vaselate between being okay, and not okay. Home cooked meals help, and so cdoes fresh air through the window, but I am restless and need to move.

I am also very anxious about asking for things from my room mates sometimes because of stupid brain weasle assumptions that I am having a hard time getting around.

It's been almost two weeks, and I've not been out of the house since Mar. 14...and I just...need the air today.

I am also in love with camemiel tea and my kitties. Kitties are love. So much win.

Sympathies on not having been out of the house. I sat on the verandah today, and it made a significant difference to my mood. I hope you can find something that works for you to get some air.

We have the windows open. It's helping a little.

With two at risk people in the house+a two-year old, it's about the best we can do.

Finished 16 more face masks, and got an address from MaskMakers to send them- an assisted living facility. SO glad I have some flat rate Priority Mail packages so I can pay on line and have it picked up at the house.

Wrote another short fic in my Battling Coronavirus series-- this time it's DUM-E, Tony Stark's faithful bot, who pitches in to help.

Yay! I always said Marvel missed a good thing when they didn't make a spin off.

I'd watch You Dummy. :^)

I'm struggling for reasons that are probably only tangentially related to the current pandemic, in that I'm having a bad pain day (at the 'trying not to cry' level) and waiting for the painkillers to kick in. So in half an hour I'll probably be able to cope with eating breakfast, which will improve things.

Oh gods, I hate bad pain days. They suck.

Lots of sympathies and social distance hugs.

thanks. I reckon I got 8 hours cover out of the meds -- which is either more than I should from the paracetamol, or not nearly enough on the other (which is meant to be 1 a day). But I achieved some things in that time.

Well that's good, at least.

But yeah...med run-out is never a good thing. I sometimes deal with that with my antipsychotics, and it's a magor anxiety producer.

I'm still adjusting to this new anti-inflammatory, so I'm hoping it won't keep happening. And I've some of the old one that I'll use next time things are bad, and see if it gets me through the day. I kind of know what I did to trigger the flare up at least.

Just had a two hour Skype session with our best parent friends (the people we camp with in the summer). It was awesome. Human virtual contact! (And sooooo many tiki drinks.)

Our kids, meanwhile, are or were on their own call.

Spent yesterday in bed. I tripped and fell going out for my once-a-day-as-per-government-regulations exercise on Friday, and though the damage was scrapes and bruises (I had to fend off the efforts of a dogwalker to help me rise to my feet) I found myself unexpectedly shaken, probably with a "not this as well as everything else" vibe. So I retreated under the duvet with Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Shuttle and am feeling much better today.

Oh, no, that is dreadful about the fall, and having to get someone to keep their distance. Glad to hear that today is better.

I did feel awfully ungrateful, especially since it was because I'd turned to say "Aaaah!" to her dog (a lovely little West Highland terrier) that I'd tripped up, and she might have been feeling (completely unreasonably) a bit responsible.

So many of our standard habits and reflexes, that are entirely appropriate in Normal Times, are bad-must-avoid now. It makes ordinary interactions so challenging.

Yesterday I played 7 hours of Civilization VI with a co-worker which meant that I only went to bed at 1 AM. Today daylight savings a.k.a summer time begins so today is an hour shorter, and I effectively woke up at 11:40 AM. That is throwing off my schedule today, and I'm probably going to be adjusting to that for another week. [sigh]

I'm a feeling a bit snotty today, which I'm pretty sure is simply a resurgence of the cold I've had since the start of March, but it's hard not to catastrophise a bit. Given I felt pretty good last night after a two hour skype with my BFF (whose birthday is on Saturday. We're hoping to be able to see each other from opposite sides of the road on our daily walk then, as we're only about half an hour's walk apart) I don't think it's anything more sinister.

I had a good lie in this morning, which was the first since this all began, and which was excellent and much, much needed. I just hope I can sleep tonight, as I'm working tomorrow and it wouldn't do to be yawning through all my calls!

I'm getting terribly frustrated with all the assholes who refuse to actually socially distance. Philly is two hours from New York and probably only a week behind on the epidemic surge hitting and people are just hanging around like it's no big deal.

My cousin was talking about how her family go out together in a group of six to walk the dog. In her mind, they live in such close proximity, social distancing between them isn't really an option. That part is true, but I'm like, "What's the difference between you and the college kids having a party the other day you were complaining about?" To an outsider in both of your groups look the same – a bunch of people who are ignoring social distancing. So, basically, you are normalizing and letting other people feel okay about not social distancing.

I finally just had to stop responding, because she's not going to accept that her logic (that they are different because they are all already exposed to each other– even if nobody who sees them knows that) is flawed and she is consciously choosing to do something she wants other people not to do because she views her circumstances as special.

I've also been pissed about the entire narrative around masks in the West. Masks aren't just to protect you, they are to protect other people. And they don't have to be n95 masks to offer some protection to you and a lot of protection to other people. I noticed this morning, a couple of news articles about how WHO is rethinking their advice about masks and maybe we should be emulating Asians with universal mask wearing.

I also think there is an institutionalized racism about universal mask wearing. It is very closely tied to Asian culture. Some of countries (Taiwan, Singapore, HK, even South Korea though it briefly had a large outbreak) which could have easily been as bad as Wuhan or New York, all instituted universal mask wearing and never came close to the numbers we are seeing in the US. And, as we all know, China and South Korea are already seeing declines. But for the last two months, the media, WHO, CDC, have all been nearly silent on that aspect. if anything, some of the messaging is weirdly dubious of the actions they have been taking. It wasn't until Italy started shutting down, that the media started to seriously talk about social distancing here.
