I am feeling so much less cabin fever (though it's balanced a bit by being sleepy from all the pollen outside.) It's probably a good thing that the tempertures here will cool in the next few days so *everything* does not open up at the same time.

However, I am making plans for the laziest no-dig garden ever -- sprouted potatoes, under ground and under some composted leaf mold, and salvaged butternut squash seeds to plant. We do not have a lot of space for plants, but we lost the big oak last year, so there is more sunshine. It's worth an experiment, since we both like potatoes and squash.

A good friend is losing her father today. As she's already had it (they caught it separately), she's allowed to be with him at the end, but no one else is. My parents' neighbor two doors down died yesterday. Too many people are still being ignorant assholes about everything and I'm going back and forth between sorrow and anger. None of it had to be like this.

On the brighter side, I got through today with Alexis Rose cosplay.

I'm Okay-ish. Like this online game is helping, but I'm still waiting on my CPAP supplies and I'm sleeping more than I want, and it sucks.

...

I'm drinking more caffeine than should be healthy, and I feel useless because all I do is the same chores over and over and while I don't mind them, it's harder and harder to stay out of my head because of manotany.

...

But Mom is being very supportive and sending PPE (Disposable masks) and is keeping me updated on how they're doing.

So better, but still not quit "okay"

My landlord texted me to say he's tired of dealing with the shifty cable company so he's canceling Internet service at the house ASAP. They are the only ISP serving this locale and they don't offer relevant low-income plans. So if and when he goes through with it, I will have connectivity only via making trips into town and wardriving, I guess. The timing could be better.

I'm doing better today. I don't feel like an exposed nerve and I got some sleep. I woke up several times during the night so I probably didn't get much REM sleep but I'll try adding a magnesium supplement, hope it'll help. My mental state is better, I'm not actively thinking about Bro #3 and have been tending to my own mental self yesterday by making soup (which turned out pretty tasty) and playing Civilization IV. Slowly getting back to normal.

One day at a time, one day at a time.

Sympathies. While in theory I should have little to no trouble (really good team, good connectivity, wifi that mostly works, partner to bounce ideas off because we work in the same team, reasonable office set up) I hit Friday last week and just couldn't keep going. The weekend helped some, but yesterday was a disaster. And I've some practice at working from home, just never 5 days a week for a full time job.

Oh, that is wonderful that the cabin fever has retreated. Here's to it staying away. Your planned garden sounds like a great idea. And reminds me that I have a pile of sprouted potatoes, a compost heap that needs lowering, and a newly empty section of garden...

I ventured out today for the first time in a week to get some fresh groceries. I was wearing my homemade cloth facemask and felt a bit weird, because almost nobody else in the supermarket was wearing a mask, even though it wasn't easy to keep at a distance in the isles despite the supermarket limiting the number of people who could enter at the same time.

On the upside I managed not to fidget with the mask and the fogging of my glasses was manageable. Though climbing the five flights of stairs to my apartment is even more unpleasant when breathing through a mask. Or maybe I'm getting out of shape because I'm only going up once or twice a week for a while now, rather than once or twice daily at least...

Otherwise I'm feeling quite lonely because most of my contact now that all sorts of offline activities have been cancelled is to my siblings, but it's always me reaching out to them rather than them texting me, so I'm starting to feel like I'm bothering them.

If you can incorporate a wire across the bridge of your nose and upper cheeks somehow, it really does help with the glasses fogging, I find.

I hear you on the always reaching out. I'm very introverted but have a small circle of people I enjoy seeing on a regular basis. Now we can't do that informal in-person thing and they have pre-established facebook networks which they're all now living in. I am gratefully not on FB - nvm the politics of it, the vicious gossip of the local scene is enough! - but then I don't hear back when I text unless (I feel like) I nag, and then it's a very surface exchange anyway. Hopefully we'll all get better at striking a balance and finding creative ways to strengthen connections but, yeah, very awkward at the moment.

Yeah, I'm not on FB either.

I've seen the wire advice, but didn't have any suitable wire on hand. The wire bits that come with freezer bags for closing that I did try to insert weren't sturdy enough to make much of a difference. I guess I will have to dig through the odds and ends of my toolbox and assorted crafting supplies for a more comfortable DIY mask, considering this is bound to go on for a while.

Friend of mine suggested a bit of tape at the top of the mask (on the nose) to hold it closer to the face and keep it down from the glasses. Some masking tape should be fine (as well as come off relatively easily).

If you have any, 'wash' your glasses in shaving cream; that's supposed to reduce the fogging also.

Hang in there!

ratcreature: RatCreature is thinking: hmm...? (hmm...?)
From: [personal profile] ratcreature
Hmm, I have a roll of medical tape that sticks to both cloth and skin sufficiently without irritating my skin, so that might be worth a try. Though I would need to be more careful taking it off then, I think, to follow these instructions you see for limiting cross contamination during mask removal.

I'm such a ridiculous fragile flower. I *think* i hurt my foot last night by...kneeling on a wood floor to cut out masks. That's it. I don't know what else I could have done to cause the problem because I sat docilely in a chair the entire rest of the day. At some point in the evening, I noticed a throbbing, horrible pain that got worse and worse, to the point that I wondered if I'd rebroken my foot somehow, and then I had to try to remember which foot I'd even broken in the first place, because it was like 15 years ago.

I thought about waking B to take me to the ER, but I am not interested in being anywhere near an ER in the time of covid-19, so I decided to, metaphorically speaking, walk it off. Anyway, if it was broken, they'd just tell me to ice it and stay off it, so I'm practicing good medicine.

It feels much better today after a regimen of ice and rest. It's derailed my entire day, and maybe that needed to happen.

The foot that hurts now: left. The foot that B and I both think I broke 15 years ago: right. But we seriously don't remember. I've broken a ton of bones in my life, but I don't remember which side for most of them. At least my nose is in the middle, and I'm confident about that one.

Good wishes to you!~. And yes, in theory it should be fine, as I do a lot of work on my computer in any case. But I usually work on campus or at coffee shops, where there's a lot of background noise. Home is quiet (I live alone) and full of distractions (books, bed, cleaning, etc.). And I miss interacting with students in person a lot more than I thought I would.

I'm trying to extend some grace to myself, but it can be hard. Hope you can cut yourself some slack as well.
