Date: 2021-02-23 11:57 am (UTC)content note: discussions of suicide
So, I've been at a work conference yesterday and today (Western Australia, where this is a relatively safe activity). In yesterday's plenary session, the welcome speaker, without warning, broke into a memorial for the farmers who committed suicide in 2020. Without any irony, or real consideration that anyone in the room might be having difficulties. Without any consideration for who in the room might have lost someone in recent months. And without any real acknowledgement that people might be affected and need something right now. There was a slide about who can be contacted. I managed to not burst in to tears, but it was a bit close. I spent most of the next section of the talks being a bit rattled.
I get the why - this was a prime community gathering for getting this kind of message out. But, ah, shall we say, the implementation could have been better.
