My landlord will only accept rent payments made through an electronic payments system, and that system is only available (where I live) through Smith's grocery store or Walmart. So I went to Smith's, thinking to combine paying rent with picking up some groceries I needed (of the sort that I can't find at the fancy, healthy/natural grocery store where I work).

The Smith's I went to had closed its payments service because the person working there had to go home, and apparently no one else was trained to do it. I . . . was frustrated and nearly became That Customer, but managed to restrain myself.

Then I went to Walmart. Where the payments service was unavailable because their system was down.

Finally I had to go to the other Smith's location and was able at last to pay my rent. Luckily this isn't as huge an inconvenience as it would be for, say, someone unable to drive, but it still meant I was at three large retail establishments at a time when we're all supposed to be avoiding crowds.

All because the apartment management company decided, a few years ago, that accepting checks was too much of a hassle. *fumes*

ETA: And it's back to work for me tomorrow, as this is the last day of my weekend. It's . . . I'm glad to have a job, and I know a lot of people who work retail are in a really bad employment/financial situation right now. But I really, really envy the people who are either working from home or who have been given paid leave. I'm finding it kind of difficult to handle seeing those people complain about having to be at home.
