Not happy about the announcement that Justin Trudeau was pushed into making today. Not happy at all.

I live in the greater New Orleans area and the speed at which we're being forced to move on from the events of New Year's Eve/Day (it was 3am and technically the 1st) is astonishing. They had Bourbon Street open and people partying over gravesites within 48 hours. Because ~tourism~. They delayed the Sugar Bowl by a whole 24 hours, what more could they have done? /sarcasm We've got the Super Bowl coming and Mardi Gras and gosh look at how Resilient New Orleans is. (The next person to call us resilient is facing a howling mob.)

There have been several pointed local pieces about how a Second Line happens after the body is buried and couldn't we have waited until all the dead had been identified and the families notified before reopening Bourbon Street. There is a growing movement to celebrate Mardi Gras in smaller more private events and just not go to the big parades. We all just exhausted of being fun party people all the time and no one caring about us past that.

Wow, I’m kinda shocked, I would have expected more reverence for the dead than to rush to get the partying going again. Except ugh, the mighty tourism and our icky attitude of denial about gun violence. It must all be very distressing, I’m sorry. *hugs*

I’d just seen a video on this from residents there about how they were being forced to process their grief “in a timley manner” b/c customers were waiting to be served and rolling their eyes at them for “not being resilient enough”. The lack of compassion these days is ALARMING. 😬

What happened was horrible and incredibly traumatic for a little bit of everyone, and it’s not fair to y’all that live there that are being turned into “party machines” while you grieve. I’m so so sorry. Sending you hugs and support from across the way. *hugs*

Somehow or another, I am still alive....but a bit baffled how it got to be January 7th, when I could have sworn yesterday was the 4th. Also, this new cold snap is going to kill my hands, I do not approve.
