Got up this morning and in an act of unparalleled absentmindedness took my bedtime pills--including sleeping tablets--instead of early-morning ones. So I had to go back to bed and that was it for the day, got up a few hours later but no operating heavy machinery (=car) today. Thank goodness Dirk was already scheduled to make delicious burgers for Shabbat dinner.

new month, new headache: we get so little mail, I didn't notice a bird building a nest in the back of our mailbox (it's been damaged that it takes effort to get it closed and guess whose mail carrier has a history of not bothering) until it already had eggs. It's illegal to move a songbird nest with eggs in it, so. Yeah. I need rum. Alas, it's also illegal for me to get any alcohol shipped to me that isn't, like, a wine subscription service. And I'm housebound. So no rum for me. :p

Oh, wow, "bird nest in the mailbox" is a new one to me.

We *think* she's a Carolina wren, who do prefer to nest in caverns or hollowed out trees - they'll build a dome over the nest if the male picks a spot without a natural roof, but the mailbox being a mini-cave, I guess it was irresistible? At least the box is long enough that letters don't reach the nest, so she might be safe, but I'm still going to have to trek up there every day from now until the end of September to be sure she's still okay. :p

I'm trying to have a sense of humor about the whole thing and she's flown at me twice now, but not in a vicious way? I think the pair picked the box because we have so little people activity at our row of mailboxes and mine is at least partly open more often than not, so they're sort of used to people but also not? Just going to have to be careful not to buy anything that might get shoved into the mailbox by careless hands. :p

Everything smells of smoke, and argh. My lungs, they do not like this. I'm not aware of any bushfires, and the prevailing wind means it could be from hundreds of km away, so I'm not worried, I'm just not happy.
