There are several here in my podunk city of 6 million (small for a Chinese city). They're usually in a mall. And perceived as somewhat upscale. Because it's Western, of course. The three I've been to have been in basements.

They're very much walmart, but with the Chinese spin. It also means the signs in the aisles telling you what's there are in english as well as chinese. And they've got the Great Value brand, too. Which really helps with product selection.

I've got a translation app on my phone which works with pics, but I've only had that for a bit over a year. Before that, I was rather lost. Depending on pictures on packagin, which aren't always useful. But Great Value products had english subtitles, so to speak. Which really really helped.

(we also have Starbucks, McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC (the mashed potatoes taste exactly the same!).

OH! and unlike in a usian walmart store, if you need help, there's an employee just waiting to help you no more than an aisle away!

I remember getting KFC in desperation in Beijing years ago after an unfortunate lunch where what I ordered turned out to be a sweet peanut soup!

Yeah, they can be really creative with food here. The cold noodles were really good, though generally not available in the winter. Never encountered a sweep peanut soup here, though they do like 'peanut milk' which sounds so gross, but is actually not bad. Especially if I forget to specify not spicy (the first thing i learned to say in chinese)! It soothes the burn straight away. ;)
