There are several here in my podunk city of 6 million (small for a Chinese city). They're usually in a mall. And perceived as somewhat upscale. Because it's Western, of course. The three I've been to have been in basements.
They're very much walmart, but with the Chinese spin. It also means the signs in the aisles telling you what's there are in english as well as chinese. And they've got the Great Value brand, too. Which really helps with product selection.
I've got a translation app on my phone which works with pics, but I've only had that for a bit over a year. Before that, I was rather lost. Depending on pictures on packagin, which aren't always useful. But Great Value products had english subtitles, so to speak. Which really really helped.
(we also have Starbucks, McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC (the mashed potatoes taste exactly the same!).
OH! and unlike in a usian walmart store, if you need help, there's an employee just waiting to help you no more than an aisle away!
