... I had a whole coherent thought about animal rescue, but it's gone now and I'm too tired to try reconstructing it. I just wish people would actually follow through on helping instead of just talking about it - two of our fosters were supposed to be picked up for rehoming this past Friday. Supposed to being the key words there.

I'm ****deeply horrified**** - my state had 6,711 new COVID cases yesterday, and yet my state is throwing away public health protections :(

"[State] mask mandate will be dropped from Friday, as the state moves to new baseline public health measures.

Other changes include removing capacity limits at all venues, including the two square metre rule, and the 75 per cent limit at stadiums.

[State] G2G pass system will be scrapped, allowing free travel into the state, and vaccination mandates for entry into venues such as pubs and nightclubs will also be abandoned.

Close contacts of positive COVID cases will no longer have to quarantine for seven days if they are symptom-free.

Masks will still be required on public transport, in rideshare services and taxis, at aged care facilities, hospitals and airports."

Yeah, same here. Enormous case numbers, yet almost all measures are being abandoned. It feels like the state has just given up on doing anything because they got tired of it.

And that when we also get studies that people who survive COVID without obvious difficulties and even escape noticable post-viral long COVID symptoms, still may end up with cardiovascular damage and higher risks for heart attacks and what not. And I don't see anyone among the politicians who now seem to expect that we all just get sick with this every few months, invest in all the medical and social infrastructure to prepare for that not unlikely fallout either. They all just want to pretend nothing bad is happening. :/

Sadly there's a long anti-vax and anti-science, anti mainstream medicine tradition here.

And now the US exports their crazy on top of that homegrown tradition. :(

I'm waiting for the current anglophone transphobic panic to arrive here soonish in full force (mind, without even having made huge gains in trans visibility beforehand, I mean, gender policing is quite strong here, like the government only allowed parents to give gender neutral names without a second gendered one a few years ago like in 2008 iirc).

I'm not entirely sure how they'll create panic over bathrooms, when the default for public saunas is them being mixed and naked, and nobody worries about that, but I'm sure they'll manage somehow.

I'm so sorry to hear this. When things like this happen in the US, I know it's because of how our toxic politics is playing out in particular states. Are you in he Texas of Australia?

My state has actually had the strictest COVID protections of any state in Australia from 2020 til now...

for most of the pandemic we basically closed our border to all the other Australian states unless you had an extremely valid reason to travel into our state (essential worker, government official, dying relative) and even then you had to do 14 days hotel quarantine monitored by a security guard...

All the other Australian states ditched their health protections weeks/months before we did...
