Today has been a good one. I got over my fear of Zoom meetings and met with my homeroom students for a few minutes at lunchtime. It was *so* great to see their faces. To give some context, we weren't permitted to use video conferencing until very recently, and it's on a voluntary basis, so I didn't have to do it at all. Getting over my serious anxiety about it is a pretty big deal for me, and I wanted to share it with you.

Also, I've been on a fitness quest since the first of the year to lose 30 pounds, and I made that goal today, so that's pretty sweet! :-) I've got more to lose, but this was a milestone, for sure. I've actually found sticking to my eating and exercise plan a very useful coping mechanism during the pandemic; it's given me control over *something* in my life, and that has helped a lot. Perhaps the best part of it is that I'm able to jog/run again, and I missed that *so* much. It's a safety valve that never fails to help me even out when I'm having a difficult time, so being able to do it again is just really great.

I got in my syllabus for one of my two summer courses, yay. And I got to see the graduation of this year's class of my graduate school, it was surprisingly moving to see the dean alone on the stage reading the students' names while they appeared on zoom with their families. The graduation of my own students was postponed until August and we still don't know what it will look like, but it was good to see a zoom graduation can still be meaningful.

In other news, we did some major household reorganizing to carve out some space so I can sit in a chair while working. Until today I've been sitting on my bed, which was fine as a stopgap but was getting old. A chair is nice.

Oh good for you for meeting with your students. Zoom can be a terrifying mess, so really good for you for doing it and having a good experience.

We travel in the same circles! ;-)

Congratulations on both those things... doing the Zoom with your kids and the fitness goal! Those are excellent and major milestones for you!

Hang in there!

I just found out someone I know -- mostly online but occasionally in "real life" -- has passed from covid-19. Just today. He was 61. Dammit.

I'm mostly okay - did myself a mischief stretching yesterday (dodgy joints are dodgy) but I promptly went and did all the right things, and while I'm a bit sore, I'm also still walking.

A few days back, I noticed that someone ticked 'I need some help', and I've been looking out for requests for help, and not seeing any. Did the person get what they needed? (I'm dashing in and out today, but if I remember tomorrow and no-one has answered, I'll go back and see whether I've just missed the relevant post/comment)

I answered that I could use some help, but given where I am, there's nothing anyone can do. But I felt the need to answer honestly. *shrug*

(which is why I've not been checking in lately. I'm not a never-ending mess of bad. I'm bipolar and it's pretty rapidly cycling right now. Which is so much not fun)

Thank you so much. It was a huge relief to have the first time done with. I anticipate problems moving forward, but at least now I have a better sense of what those problems will look like.

I can imagine that it would be moving to watch a Zoom graduation. I'm glad you at least had that.

We're doing a senior "drive-thru" parade on graduation day. We'll be standing on designated, socially distanced spots around the parking lot, and the kids w/ or w/o their parents will drive by and wave, etc. We'll have signs and noisemakers too. It's not the same AT ALL as graduation, but it's something to mark the original date. We're hoping to have an in-person event in August or even during their Thanksgiving break from college in the fall.

When people tick "I need some help" [personal profile] twistedchick or I contact them directly if they don't talk about it in comments. But good on you to notice--please double-check if you can and tell me who it was, to make sure it didn't drop between chairs.

Oh that sounds really lovely and like it could be quite powerful.

I think my school was originally planning to have the graduation in August be in person but now we're talking about still being online in the fall semester so maybe not.
