this community is a good idea

I've been harbouring vague anxiety, due to work/money worries, but learned this afternoon I will be paid at least through the end of April, which helps.

I bought a thermometer a long time ago and it's been in my medicine cabinet and I wasn't sure it even worked anymore; I'm fairly certain I've never used it because I haven't had a fever since I was a kid. Not sure about how great this thermometer was, I'd been trying to buy a replacement one online, with no luck at all (the only one I was able to find is now backordered and may or may not ever ship). But I'm having a sore throat, so I just tested it and it turned on. It was extremely confusing to use and it only showed me Celsius. I have no idea if I used it correctly. Anyone have tips on how to make sure you get accurate results with a cheap home thermometer?

It depends on the thermometer? Probably the best thing right now is to take your temperature once a day at the same time to get a baseline, and then you will either get a consistent baseline and even if it's inaccurate, you'll be able to tell if it's gone above baseline. Or it'll be too inconsistent to get a baseline, and you'll know it's not worth it.

The batteries in those last a really long time, so I'm not surprised it still works. If you're using it correctly (that will depend on what kind it is, post a pic or link if you like) and it's showing you a temp between 36 and 37.2, then you're not running a fever.

Thermometer picture

It says "Lo" a lot, this is either the battery or my temperature (because it starts counting numbers and then shows Lo and goes back to the numbers -- however it also says Lo lots of other times, so I assume it's the battery), which was 36.7. Thanks be to Excel where I can record it and Excel does the math for me. :D

In terms of positioning, how far under the tongue does it go, and should I be holding onto the end or bite on it to hold it in place? I was just shoving it in and holding onto the end, is that wrong?

Okay...that is an old one. It might not have much more life in it, jsyk.

The sweet spot for an oral temp is under your tongue in the pocket beside the frenulum (fleshy webbing bit in the middle). Turn it on, pop it in there gently, close your mouth around it and wait for the beep that means it's cooked. You can hold it in place if it's more comfortable for you but it needs to stay under your tongue.

Lo means it's not reading the temperature IIRC.

On the similar one we have, Lo just means that it's reading a temperature below the range it's set to measure (which usually includes room temperature on that kind of thermometer.)

I think I’d be doing okay except I had my first sciatica attack on Saturday, and I was doing better, but then today I have this tingling pain in my calf/foot. I’m pretty sure it’s more of the sciatica but it hurts and it’s weirding me out that I wouldn’t even want to go to urgent care to check it out. I did email my doctor so hopefully she’ll respond with something encouraging tomorrow.

We’re in a pandemic, it somehow feels ridiculous to be in pain from something as mundane as sciatica.

Yeah, me too. Bum knee for me, with a lot of pain even hobbling around home. I did go out today to a walk-in emergency clinic but the xrays didn't show anything definite so just have to rest and take fairly useless pain meds. Sciatica's nasty - hope yours clears up soon.

I'm alone, don't drive, and am just at the age where they warn it can hit a person hard. But I'm used to being a hermit (usually go out once a month by taxi for groceries, rarely for anything else), so staying in my house isn't anything new (I do go out in my yard every day).

I'm going to try to use my DW more often, to post whatever seems cheerful.

It's so ugly it's cute, so I'm going to try. :^) If I succeed I'll try to post pics on my DW tomorrow.

I'm doing okay; they closed the library where I work on Friday so I don't have to worry about that. We have plenty of food, I probably won't go out again until my prescription renewal comes due in four days. So far so good health-wise.

I've officially hit the point of texting people if I haven't heard from them in 48 hours.

On the less paranoid side, I made tonkotsu broth for ramen (last night through this morning) and then ramen tonight for dinner, so that was a new thing for me to have done. And we made a bunch of pavers into a temporary patio (we'll eventually make them into a non-temporary one, but not until we can get things like sand easily) so we can eat outdoors.

Outdoor dining room is two great ideas!

- Installing it is good exercise
- In a few weeks, you'd be able to host widely-spaced parties.

I am OK but behind in my work from home work and still have that slight sore throat/slight sniffles thing, but it's probably spring allergies as there's no fever. I am relatively optimistic that I will survive whatever I have + the isolation of staying home.

I feel like the things I'm disappointed about (cancelling the research education series I devised, the trip up to Darwin for work that was going to be a daiquiri extravaganza for my birthday, going out to the waterhole for a picnic) are all pretty trivial things to be sad about in times like this, especially when the stakes for people around me are so high. But feelings nonetheless.

I'm also having complex feelings about how my folks are managing. We're low contact and they're on the low information diet, but they're also old and crumbly and still my parents despite being pretty terrible people. I spent an hour online sorting them out with grocery delivery yesterday because they don't go out and are freaking out about running low on things. Things are never just one thing, are they?

Never one thing!

And I finally learned in my fifth decade that anyone's unhappiness is their unhappiness and therefore valid. Comparing myself to others doesn't make me feel less unhappy.

I am super confused. I joined this today just now, went to the Recent Entries page to do the latest poll, and it doesn't show up. The only entries that show are the initial ones plus the poll on the 17th. I had to go to the archive calender to get it to show up (i wasn't on my reading page, because I'd just joined). I don't understand why all the recent entries aren't showing up on the community's main page, unless things are set to only show if they're on people's reading pages? In the future, of course, they will show up on my reading page, but I'm baffled by why the 17th is the most recent entry showing--something special we need to do, or maybe we need to be approved to see them by the mods?

Yeah, it's super weird. I reset the cache and everything. I'm using Safari, a fairly recent version. I just thought maybe there was some setting for members vs. nonmembers to see, but if that's not the case, then I'll just chalk it up to weirdness and go through my reading list and see if it shows up there.

ETA It's the same when I look at it in Firefox, but it does appear that it's showing up on my list. Spooooooky.

I am officially on spring break (from teaching at uni) - except of course we're not going back on campus after the break. I didn't get to see my best friend and her kids, and my work ethic taken a a real hit - usually I work in coffee shops and on campus, with other people around me.

This feels like the usual slow depressive slide that would end when I'm back in the structure of campus and office hours and classes. But next week looks a lot like this week, only with more Zoom meetings. *sighs*
