We just adopted a dog 3+ weeks ago, and consequently are going out in our big yard more often. Unfortunately, our Southern backyard is rife with chiggers, and now I have horrible itchy bites in every fold and crevice of my body--there are more of these than I realized. I slather on itch sauce while I'm awake, but when I sleep, I scratch, and I'm covered with truly horrifying bruises from that. It's super-gross. I've told my partner he has to DO SOMETHING because yardwork is his self-assigned job, so I think he's going pesticide shopping tomorrow.

I grew up in the PNW, and even though I've lived in Nashville for 21 years, I'm somehow not adjusted to it, and these are worse bugs than I ever encountered living on the coast.

Otherwise, Tennessee is full of bullshit nonsense in terms of dealing rationally with COVID, everything is opening up DESPITE all the new cases, and I'm looking forward to another 6+ months at home before enough people die to convince these no-mask "freedom" fighters to get with the program.

Today was emotionally not easy. Someone I knew a few years ago who moved away has died of the virus. When I took the car out to get gas, and to drop a book at the library drop box, I went through one of the areas where I like to wander around in this kind of good weather. Normally I'd park, walk through the little old-time shops, look at the antiques, maybe buy something small, walk down to the rose garden and back, and get something like ice cream or apple pie at one of the little cafes. But today everything was closed, the cafes, the antique shops, the bookshop. I've seen ghost towns out west that didn't feel as creepy as this. When I got home I got online and watched Avengers: Endgame because it felt like I did. I know, better the rotten feeling and staying well. But it still felt as if I was driving through a very bad horror movie.

I am having a very bad sneezing day. I can still smell, though.

Wow, chiggers sound like a huge hassle and the last thing you need. Just mosquitoes where I am, and occasional cat fleas.

Yeah, I was unprepared for the bugs when we moved here from Seattle, and I've just stayed unprepared all this time. Mountain lake deer flies are something I *am* prepared for, but we don't have any of those here!

Chiggers: the worst bug bite itch you have *ever* felt, and it's probably somewhere you can't scratch.
