I learned a little over two hours ago that a sweet woman who has become a friend is dying of esophageal cancer and may live a year. This, on top of another friend's partner with breast cancer (in treatment), an older friend's discovery of some kind of abdominal cancer (she's starting chemo), a cousin's rounds of breast cancer treatments (successful so far), another old friend's bout with breast cancer that's ongoing, the death of someone I'd just started to get to know, and the vanishing of a man who has been a friend though not close -- he went into the hospital several months ago, and there has been no word, not to me, not to anyone, which makes everything very difficult -- in another city, of course.

It's too much at once. I want my friends to live long enough that we can laugh together in our eighties, and it's not happening. And in the midst of this, I am immune compromised, can't get another COVID booster because of bad reaction to a prior one, and unable to do anything personally to help with any of it.
