I've given myself a Twitterectomy and am avoiding my usual news sites because they make me too anxious. Can any of you recommend a good way to keep up with the news I actually need to know?

Your mileage will really vary with this as to its suitability, but I sometimes depend on a trusted friend to pass me news that I need to know; it's less stressful coming from a person.

Yesterday I actually managed to sort out a banking thing. I tried since last Thursday, and it was a total farce how hard it was to reach them. On Thursday I was on hold for ages (well, about 10 minutes, but it felt longer) before their system decided wait times were too long and kicked me off, on Friday after holding hell I finally got a person, but they claimed they couldn't solve the issue, and I should try another one of their phone numbers, which actually was the exact number I already had called, and then recommended trying their live chat. Which I did from then on, but there constantly were no available employees. On Monday I failed completely to reach anyone via any mode, but yesterday after failing again via chat I tried the phone line again in desperation, and actually got through.

The problem itself only took a few minutes to sort out and was no problem for that employee. But I lost most of four days for their nonsense, between the time I spent trying to reach somebody and me dreading phone calls and having to psych myself for bank interactions.

From the automated announcements on hold I gathered that I was unlucky to have my problem coincide with a recent update to their online banking that is causing trouble, but this was just ridiculous.

It's national-level USA news, with each major topic getting a headline, a one-paragraph summary, and a link to a news article from one of the major publishers. Designed to let a person keep up with events with minimal interface and stress.

Can't guarantee it'll cover everything, but when people's remarks make it clear that Something Has Happened, this is usually an efficient way to find out what.

Took the car in for its long-delayed oil change and learned that it needs a brake job also. argh.
